Come together...right now...over me...

There has been a fire in Bella Bella, the structure that housed the cafe/library, band store, liquor store, and post office has been totally gutted.

The fire started around 4am this morning, rumors are apparently swirling and arson has been mentioned but not confirmed.

There are two huge gas tanks behind the building and for awhile there was an evacuation order in effect for the front street because there was a danger that they would go. Thankfully that didn't happen but several seniors have been removed from the hospital.

Builders that have been working on the school renovations loaned the fire fighters their forklift to help them better combat the fire. The coast guard brought in one of their water pumps to help.

As of 3:00 this afternoon:

  • The store is being moved into one of the church buildings. People were already hard at work building shelves.
  • A double the regular shipment is coming in tomorrow via barge.
  • Freight today was all free from Pacific Coastal Air.
  • The post office will be re-located but there is no specific location yet.
  • The school gym will be used for temporary storage of items.
  • People are making bread to sell.
  • The only interac machine burned down with the fire so luckily- the church make-shift store will be able to take interac.
  • Many people are taking the 11 hour ferry to Port Hardy tonight to go shopping there and then coming back on the next days ferry. That is $170 for the trip.
  • Overwaitea in Port Hardy is also taking orders and putting packages of food on the ferry for people.
I understand that there will be a donation page set up in the near future I will post it when I am assured of it's usefulness and authenticity.
